A Moot Court is a simulated arbitral proceeding. The Willem C. Vis Moot is the world’s largest and most renowned international competition for law students in the field of International Commercial Law and Arbitration. More than 360 teams from over 70 states participate in the Willem C. Vis Moot by working on a fictional border crossing case as party representatives, drafting memoranda for the plaintiff and for the defendant and negotiating in front of a three-member jury consisting of Lawyers, Professors and Arbitrators from all over the world. The finales for the Willem C. Vis Moot take place in Vienna, Austria. Additionally, there is the opportunity to participate in the finals of the Willem C. Vis East Moot, which refers to the identical case and takes place in Hong Kong.

The dispute is governed by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), the Arbitration Proceedings underlie International Procedural Rules.

During the internal preparation phase, the participants are trained in applying mandatory provisions of the CISG and are introduced to Arbitration Proceedings. Furthermore, the team members improve their English skills, especially by learning legal terminology and the English language.

After the distribution of the annual problem, the teams start to draft the memoranda for Claimant and Respondent. Before taking part in the final arguments in Vienna and Hong Kong in April, there are practical exercises in various law firms and several national and international Pre-Moots, to test and improve the rhetorical and linguistic abilities of the teams.

Following the final arguments in Vienna and Hong Kong, the winning team and the best speakers will receive awards for their performances. Moreover, the best memoranda for Claimant and for Respondent will be rewarded.

The major goal of the competition is to foster the study of international commercial law and to give students the possibility to learn about alternative conflict resolution apart from state court proceedings. The Willem C. Vis Moot enables its participants to establish contacts to lawyers, arbitrators and students from all over the world.

  • Teilnahme am DLA Piper St. Petersburg Pre-Moot - Am 19. und 20. März nahm das Vis Moot Team an dem letzten Pre-Moot vor den offiziellen Finalrunden in Wien teil. Dort verhandelte es gegen Teams aus St. Petersburg, London, Indien und Belgrad und konnte anhand des konstruktiven Feedbacks den Plädoyers den letzten Feinschliff geben.
  • Besonders erfolgreiche Teilnahme an dem 11. Shangahi Pre-Moot ICC Asia - Das Bochumer Team durfte vom 08. bis zum 12. März seine Fähigkeiten im Rahmen des virtuellen Shanghai Pre-Moots unter Beweis stellen. Auch hier bot sich den Studierenden die Möglichkeit, sich mit Jurastudierenden und Schiedsrichtern aus verschiedenen Ländern auszutauschen.
